Find a clearer path to lasting comfort for dry eyes

Discover treatment options that help retain natural tears, replenish moisture and support healthy eyelid gland function.

Dry eye can be managed in different ways, depending on what is causing your symptoms and how they affect your eyes. Treatment options at Namibia Eye Institute include lubricating drops and gels, heated gel masks and Punctum plugs. These approaches can help improve moisture, support the function of the eyelid glands or keep natural tears on the surface of the eyes for longer. Your eye specialist can help identify the options that may be suitable for you.
Dry eye treatments aim to improve comfort by addressing dryness and irritation. Lubricating drops and gels help moisturise the eye’s surface, while heated gel masks can help soften oils in the eyelid glands. Punctum plugs help reduce tear drainage, allowing natural tears to remain on the eye’s surface for longer. Depending on the cause of your symptoms, one approach or a combination of treatments may be recommended.
Punctum plugs are tiny devices placed in the small openings where tears drain from your eyelids. They help keep natural tears on the surface of your eyes for longer, which may ease dryness and irritation. Some plugs are temporary and dissolve over time, while others are designed to last longer. Your eye specialist can advise whether punctum plugs are appropriate for your eyes.
Lubricating eye drops and gels help moisturise the surface of the eyes and supplement your natural tears. They can help ease symptoms such as grittiness, burning and irritation. Hydrogel products and biodegradable lubricants may also be used, depending on the formulation and your needs. Your eye specialist can recommend an appropriate option and explain how to use it.
Heated gel masks provide gentle warmth to closed eyelids. This warmth can help soften oils in the eyelid glands, allowing them to flow more easily and support the oily layer of the tear film. This may help reduce tear evaporation when eyelid gland function contributes to dry eye. Your eye specialist can advise whether heated masks may be beneficial as part of your eye-care routine.
The duration of relief depends on the treatment and the cause of your dry eye. Lubricating drops and gels generally need to be used regularly to manage symptoms, while heated gel masks may form part of an ongoing routine. Temporary Punctum plugs dissolve over time, whereas longer-lasting plugs are designed to remain in place for an extended period. Dry eye often requires ongoing management, and your treatment may be adjusted as your needs change.
The most suitable treatment depends on your symptoms, tear film, eyelid health and the factors contributing to your dry eye. An eye assessment can help determine whether lubricating drops or gels, heated gel masks, Punctum plugs or a combination of approaches may be appropriate. Namibia Eye Institute can help you understand your options and decide on a treatment plan suited to your eye health.
